My client, Janice* is a mid-level leader with a large team of direct reports. She also runs an important cross-cutting organizational initiative. To top things off, she’s a mom with lots of responsibilities at home.
Janice is in the social-impact space and is passionate about making the world a better place. Like many people in purpose-driven professions, she’s worked herself to the bone because she really cared about what the outcome would mean for people and the planet.
But Janice was frustrated. Her team came to her for too many decisions, and she was doing a lot of their work because she felt they were not stepping up. In short, she was feeling burnt out, underwater, and always in reacting mode.
In our coaching sessions, we got to the bottom of the situation. Janice did not yet understand how to delegate effectively. Luckily, delegation is a skill that can be built just like a muscle. We worked through effective delegation tactics, including providing proper context, resources, and authority levels. I even gave her some delegation scripts she tried out with her team.
We also worked through how to hold people accountable effectively. We role-played and she tried things out with her team in between our coaching sessions.
Janice was finally able to shift a lot on her plate to her team so she had more time to do her core job. She felt calmer, in more control, and more proactive. In the end, her team felt more empowered as they took on greater responsibility and accountability.
